Keeping the City Fiscally Sound

Finance is a division within the Administrative Services Department. It is responsible for accurate and timely maintenance of all City financial records, collection, disbursements of funds and the payroll process. Finance oversees the annual audit and preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, and performs year-long monitoring and analysis of budget-to-actual activities for both operational and capital budgets.

Although most of our work is done behind-the-scenes, Finance employees strive to provide quality service in responding to the needs of customers, vendors and citizens.

  • Our largest customer base resides in the business community. One of the major objectives of our staff is to provide businesses with information regarding compliance with the Business License Tax Code and provide useful sources of information related to business activity.
  • Since 2003, our citizens have been able to access the City's annual operating and capital budgets, as well as the Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports, at this website.

FAQs

Can I conduct a business out of my home?

Home-based businesses are permitted in some zones of the city. The business proposed to be conducted may not change the residential nature of the property or the neighborhood. For example, while a small or large family day care use, where the care provider resides and provides child care services as an ancillary business, may be allowed, a commercial day care use, where the business is the sole purpose of the property, may not occur.

Please see Chapter 19.120: Home Occupations for details or contact the Community Development Department at 408.777.3308 for information.
