Homestead Road Safe Routes to School Project
Project Overview
The Homestead Road Safe Routes to School Improvements Project is being led by the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and advances the work of the Homestead Safe Routes to School Study(PDF, 9MB). The project will upgrade bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure along 1.5 miles of Homestead Road between Foothill Expressway and Hollenbeck Avenue/Stelling Road.
This segment of the corridor is vital for local transportation, connecting three public schools: West Valley Elementary, Cupertino Middle, and Homestead High School. Project partners include the City of Cupertino, the City of Los Altos, the City of Sunnyvale, the County of Santa Clara, and VTA.

Project Description & Map
The project implements numerous bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements that would allow for more families to choose to walk or bike to school.
-
Pedestrian improvements include widening existing sidewalks and closing sidewalk gaps, modifying freeway on-ramp alignments, providing ADA-compliant curb ramps, installing high-visibility crosswalks, and reconfiguring intersections to reduce crossing distances and increase visibility between roadway users.
-
Bicycle improvements include upgrading existing bike lanes to separated bikeways, widening and extending a shared-use path, providing bike turns/waiting spaces in medians, and modifying traffic signals to improve bicycle detection.
-
The project will also signalize the intersection of Homestead Road and Fallen Leaf Drive, to make it easier for pedestrians and bicyclists to cross the street.
