The City anticipates construction to begin on June 23, 2022 and will be completed in October. Work will be coordinated through the scheduled festivals and events at the park to minimize disruption.

The Memorial Park Ponds project will temporarily relocate the concrete pagoda statue located in the central pond.  The statue was gifted to the City of Cupertino by Toyokawa in Japan in 1988 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sister City relationship. Engraved on the side of the statue is a message that states:  “City of Cupertino - City of Toyokawa | Commemorating the 10 year anniversary of sister city relations |Presented in 1988 from the City of Toyokawa”

The statue will be reinstalled in Memorial Park in a location determined by the Memorial Park Specific Plan project.

New plants have been put in. Please remain on the pathways to allow for the planting to establish.

In 2013, the City drained Memorial Park ponds to respond to drought restrictions. The ponds had significant water loss due to the age and poor condition of the concrete liner, as well as considerable evaporative surfaces. The City has not refilled the ponds since 2013 due to ongoing drought conditions.

The project to remove the ponds was approved and funded by City Council in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2021-2022 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Future improvements within the area will be considered with the Memorial Park Specific Plan that was approved in the same FY21-22 CIP, and will begin the design and public engagement process in the summer of 2022.
