Boosting Efficiency & Engagement

Server maintenance, software installations and tech support are crucial functions that are the province of a typical information technology, or IT, department. The City of Cupertino’s Innovation & Technology, or I&T, department does all of that and is continually leveraging emerging and innovative technologies to improve and streamline business operations and services.

Cupertino strives to be a Municipal Technology Leader by using technology to enhance services, engage citizens, and drive efficiency. Key factors include:

  1. Smart City Initiatives – Implementing IoT, adaptive traffic, and real-time data for improved urban management.
  2. Digital Services – Offering user-friendly online platforms for citizen interactions (e.g., permits, class payments).
  3. Open Data – Promoting transparency and civic engagement through accessible data.
  4. Cybersecurity – Prioritizing security measures to protect systems and resident data.
  5. Interdepartmental Integration – Using tech to foster collaboration and data sharing across city departments.
  6. Sustainability – Leveraging data for efficient resource management and eco-friendly solutions.
  7. Citizen Engagement – Utilizing digital tools for public participation and feedback.
  8. Cloud Infrastructure – Adopting scalable, cloud-based systems for flexibility and disaster recovery.
  9. Training – Investing in staff development to stay ahead in tech trends.
  10. Partnerships – Collaborating with private tech, universities, and other governments for innovative projects.

These factors enable Cupertino to lead in technology adoption, service delivery, and innovation.

Applications Division

The Applications Division manages citywide enterprise software systems critical to business operations. This includes everything from requirements gathering, design, and development to procurement, implementation, and ongoing support. Key systems include ERP, land-use management, and recreation management, along with their customer-facing portals. The division also oversees electronic records management, procurement systems, and the development of the city's website, intranet, and mobile apps. Additionally, the team supports digital services like permitting, licensing, and inspections, and develops custom software applications. They also handle system integrations and generate business analytics to support decision-making and performance tracking across departments.

GIS Division

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program serves as the central hub for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all geographically referenced information pertinent to the City of Cupertino. Alongside the administration of Cupertino's asset management system, public service request system, document management system, and the city SharePoint intranet Hub, the GIS Program oversees essential platforms such as Teams, Planner, and enterprise digital workflows. Through maps, reports, dashboards, and charts, we facilitate the exploration, understanding, and interpretation of our city's data. Our aim is to empower staff, citizens, businesses, and development communities by providing easily comprehensible visualizations that facilitate problem-solving and decision-making processes, all readily shareable and accessible.
