Bhubaneswar, India
The Temple City of India
Bhubaneswar (BBSR), Odisha, India, once was the site of about 7,000 temples. A popular tourist destination due to the hundreds of temples that still stand and its rich cultural heritage, this city honors its past while moving toward its future. Bhubaneswar recently achieved a first position in India’s Smart Cities Challenge, a government initiative to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessing technology as a means to create smart outcomes for citizens.
Cupertino and Bhubaneswar were officially designated as sister cities on August 16, 2012. The relationship was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on November 24, 2012, by former Cupertino Mayor Gilbert Wong and Bhubaneswar Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.
The Cupertino-BBSR Sister City Initiative (CBSCI), a community-based non-profit organization, fosters positive multi-cultural interaction and understanding through art, culture and education exchanges. The organization also aims to engage individuals and institutions in helping both cities to be sustainable.
CBSCI activities encompass cultural arts exchanges, student programs, and delegation visits. The Initiative also organizes the annual Heritage India Fair and collaborates with the City for the yearly India Independence Day Flag Raising in August.
