Classes

The Cupertino Senior Center offers a variety of classes available to anyone 50 plus. Classes are instructor-led and provide a wide range of options for all activity levels. Non-Senior Center members pay an additional $10 fee per class per session.

Art Classes

Chinese Brush Painting

Learn the art of brush painting. The instructor will teach the “Impressionistic style,” which is easier to master. She will start with basic strokes to draw orchids, and then gradually introduce other components, such as flower pot, insects, bamboo, minnow, etc. Learn at your own pace. You will need a few supplies for class. Click here for the supply list(PDF, 83KB). Instructor: Ming-Fen Lee.  

Painting and Drawing at all Levels

Come Join the friendliest artists in town, and paint or draw 'till you drop! Student instructors will provide personal feedback on your work, but the class is open to anyone at any level to come and paint (or draw!) in the medium of their choice. Class members encourage each other in this open art session that doesn't have guidelines or curriculum - just artistic expression! Instructors: Jerome Chin and Liehwang Hwang. 

Dance and Music Classes

Drop-in passes for select dance classes are available for purchase at the front desk. A Drop-in Pass is only applicable to classes offered by the Cupertino Senior Center and is not equivalent to a Visitor Pass. Senior Center membership is required to purchase a Drop-in Pass.

 

Ballroom Dance Class

Learn standard and social ballroom dance step-patterns in this class. This ballroom dance class led by an instructor will allow you to brush up on your dance moves so that you are ready for the Ballroom Social. Instructor: Mei Lee. 

International Standard and Latin Dance – Beginner

Do you love moving to the beautiful music of Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot, or to the rhythmic music of Rumba, Cha-Cha, and Samba? Join us to learn the basics of ten international style dances. Helps improve posture and musicality. Pre-bronze and bronze-level curriculum. The focus will be on techniques and basic choreography.

International Standard and Latin Dance – Intermediate

Do you love dancing International Standard: the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep? How about Latin dances: Rumba, Chacha, Samba, Jive? The class is designed to enrich the experienced dancers by focusing on proper techniques and more complex choreography. Silver and gold-level curriculum. Please register with a dance partner.

Lap Steel Guitar

The Lap Steel Guitar's sound is unique as well as melodious and it instantly evokes images of Hawaii! This class along with your diligence and effort, will aid you in learning the fundamentals of the Lap Steel Guitar. Equipment needed: Lap steel guitar, small amplifier, amp cord, bar, and finger picks, tuner. Instructor: Lillian Fujimoto

Line Dance Basics

Learn the basics of line dance in this beginner course. Instructor: Linda Hsu

Line Dance Beginner

Beginner line dance course. Instructor: Linda Hsu

Line Dance High Beginner

Further develop your dancing skills from the beginner class. Boost your mood and coordination with this fun exercise. It is a great way to stay active and social. Instructor: Linda Hsu

Line Dance Improver/Intermediate

Further develop your line dancing skills in the next level class. Those who have been line dancing for some time and have mastered the basic steps and movements within line dancing. You will learn newer, faster dances than the beginning course. Instructor: Kathy Chang.

Line Dance Intermediate+

This classification will feature dance routines suitable for experienced dancers. It is for those who have mastered a comprehensive range of step patterns and movements. It offers a wide variety of dance routines, and more turning techniques. Instructor: Kathy Chang.

Line Dance Intermediate/Advanced

This class features dance routines suitable for experienced dancers. For those who have mastered a comprehensive range of step patterns and movements, offering a wide variety of dance routines and turning techniques. Instructor: Kathy Chang.

Ukulele Beginning

This Beginner Ukulele Class is designed for those who are interested in playing the ukulele who have little or no previous experience in playing the ukulele. You will learn basic chords and strums which will be applied to music. Please come to class with a ukulele, a music stand for your music, a tuner for tuning your ukulele, and a 3-ring binder to hold your music and class notes that will be provided to you. iPads are encouraged. Come and enjoy the fun of learning to play the ukulele while singing songs. Instructor: Delphine Ng.

Ukulele Advanced Beginning and HarmoniKatz

Practice with other Senior Center members while further developing your skills with a ukulele. Class is intended for those already familiar with their instruments. Instructor approval is required before registering. Instructor: Delphine Ng.

Hula Dance Beginning

Learn the Hawaiian art of storytelling through dance. Instructor: Patricia Gregory.

Hula Dance Performance Group

Practice toward performing around the community as a Cupertino Senior Center Volunteer. (Instructor’s approval is required before registering for performance group.) Instructor: Jackie Pereria-Anderson.

Yuan Chih Dance

Yuan Chih is a popular dance exercise from the Orient. With ninety minutes of gentle movements to music, this graceful dance class is designed to improve flexibility, endurance and boost energy. Classes will be conducted in English and Chinese. Gentle exercise and lots of fun. Instructor: Annie & Helen.

Education Classes

紅樓夢 The Dream of the Red Chamber

A Discussion on "The Dream of the Red Chamber", arguably the greatest and most complex work in the history of Chinese Literature. Class is conducted in Mandarin. Instructor: Liewhang Hwang.

Fitness Classes

Beginning Chen Style Tai Chi

Silk Reeling Exercises are a practice of Chen Tai Chi using continuous spiraling movements of the whole body. They will improve your balance, strength, relaxation, and coordination without the need to memorize a complex form. Instructor: David Aspinwall       

Chair Exercise

Come join us a for a gentle chair workout where we will focus on building whole body strength, improve balance & coordination. Grab a chair & let's do this together! Instructor: Huichen Lin.

Chair Yoga

Revitalizing chair yoga class which includes seated and standing yoga postures. This class focuses on building strength, flexibility, and mobility through mindful breathing and alignment. Step-by-step guidance is provided and is suitable for all levels. Instructor: Jahara Pagadipaala

Dancercise

Dancercise delivers a whole-body, beat-driven workout, with instructions on muscle isolation techniques to take your dance skill to the next level. Dance styles taught include Latin dances, plus Jazz and Hip Hop. You will reap the benefit of a well-toned body with improved flexibility, coordination, and increased stamina. Feldenkrais Method (by Zoom or in-person at the Senior Center)

Movement improvement class, learn how to move more comfortably and easily. Instructor: Michelle Westlaken.

Gentle Yoga

 Gentle Yoga focuses on slow paced asanas (poses) to strengthen, stretch, and provide flexibility. The pranayama (breathing techniques) helps relax and rejuvenate the cells in the body. The various meditation types practiced brings harmony to the entire body and mind.

Tai Chi - Beginner Level 1 and 2

Immerse yourself in the ancient Chinese art of moving meditation in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere while learning about its health benefits on many different levels. Treat yourself to a fun new experience while performing gentle movements that improve balance and flexibility. Instructor: Kam Chung. 

Yoga Foundations

Enjoy gently strengthening and stretching your body while precisely aligned to support healthy joints and posture. Correct posture supports all of our body systems including the mind and spirit. In Iyengar Style Yoga, we support your alignment through props to make a practice that is safe and effective at any age or ability. Instructor: Rupa Narayanan.

Zumba Gold (Virtual)

Dance your way to better health with Zumba Gold. Class is designed as a dance exercise class for active adults who are 50+. Steps are fun and easy to learn! Instructor: Grace DuVal.

Zumba Level 1

Zumba is a complete body workout which involves losing weight through cardiovascular moves, toning the body, improving flexibility, and making your balance more refined. It is a combination of low-intensity and high-intensity moves with an interval style (alternate between high and low-intensity moves). Join us in this beginner-level class. Instructor: Huichen Lin.

ESL Basics and Beginner

You will learn the English alphabet, phonics, easy grammar, practical words, and phrases.

ESL Intermediate Conversation

Join this lively ESL conversation class where you will gain confidence by speaking about topics of your interest. Instructor: Joann Andrushko.

 

Technology Classes

Apple Assistance

Own an Apple product and have questions on how to use it? Receive one-on-one assistance on how to use your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, and other Apple products so you can text, surf the web, reply to emails, and so much more! 1-hour appointments are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. Instructor: Brock Carpenter.

Apple Group Assistance

Have questions on how to use your iPad, iPhone, or Mac Book? Receive assistance in this group setting session to have your individual questions answered to help you text, surf the web, reply to emails, download applications, update software, and so much more! Sessions are scheduled on a first come first served basis. Group is maxed at 2 people. Instructor: Rosalind Schiros

Cyber Security

Technology is evolving every day and with it, cybercrime. Learn methods and best practices to keep your devices and information safe from cyber threats. This course is designed to inform, guide, and teach preventative measures against cyber-attacks. Instructor: Curt Helvey

Tech Troubleshooting

Frustrated with technology issues and need assistance? Technology issues may often be solved by simple changes to the settings on your device. Reserve a 30-minute session and bring your devices that you require assistance with. You will receive one-on-one help with any device you bring (phone, laptop, tablet, smart watch, etc.) while learning how to use your device for your needs.

iPad or iPhone Beginning

Become familiar with your iPad or iPhone by learning about gestures, home screen updates, control center, QuickType and QuickPath, and more. Members must bring a fully charged device with iOS 15 to each class. Please know your Apple account ID and password. Instructor: Rosalind Schiros. 

iPad or iPhone Intermediate

Expand your iPad skills as you are guided through the latest updates to Safari, camera, photo editing, and more. Members must bring a fully charged iPad or iPhone with iOS 15 to each class. Please know your Apple account ID and password. Instructor: Rosalind Schiros.

PC and Apple Assistance in Mandarin

Have trouble using your PC or Apple devices? Have your questions answered with one-on-one assistance on your PC, iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Assistance is for beginners to intermediate level users so you may keep up with the fast-paced changes of technology easier. Topics of assistance include but are not limited to using your web browser, replying and functions of your email account, editing and sharing photos, and so much more. 1-hour sessions are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. Socials

Looking for a reason to get out of the house? Looking for a place to meet friends, old and new? The Senior Center offers many fun and interactive social activities including ballroom dance, bocce ball, card playing, golf, karaoke, tennis, and more.

Non-members 50 plus can participate in social activities by purchasing a $5 Visitor Pass at the front desk. Visitors will receive a one-day parking permit.”

Game Time

Bingo

Friday, 1 to 3 p.m.
Hosted by the Senior Advisory Council, come enjoy an afternoon of Bingo. Cost of bingo cards ranges from $6 to $10. Daubers cost $2 each. Sales end at 12:55pm and play begins at 1 pm

Card Playing and Bridge

Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.
Come down to the Senior Center to play card games and bridge. Groups are always open to new members joining in the fun. 

Mah Jongg

Friday, noon to 4 p.m.
A game of Chinese origin usually played by four people with tiles resembling dominoes, which are drawn and discarded until one player wins with a hand of four combinations or three tiles each and a pair of matching tiles. Mah Jongg involves skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck.

Rummikub

Monday, noon to 4 p.m.
Come down to the Senior Center to play board games. Some board games provided. Members are welcome to bring their own to play. Groups are always open to new members joining in the fun.

Sports Socials

50+ Pickleball

Monday, April 7 to June 2, 8 to 11 a.m.
Cupertino Sports Center

Play doubles pickleball with other Senior Center members at the Sport Court at the Cupertino Sports Center. Senior Center membership is required. Sports Center membership is not required. Paddles and balls are not provided but nets will be provided. Preregistration is required.  

50+ Bocce Ball

Wednesday, 9 a.m. (Seasonal)
Come enjoy the outdoors while playing bocce at Blackberry Farm Park alongside the Stevens Creek Trail. Members can meet new people and have a great time while playing a game of bocce. First time players are welcome, instructions are available.

50+ Golf

Monday, 10 a.m. to noon
Tee-up with fellow Cupertino Senior Center members at the Blackberry Farm Golf Course. Course fees apply, sign up in the Pro Shop.

50+ Tennis

Tuesday and Friday, 9 to 11 a.m.
Come play tennis with other members on courts 5 and 6 at Memorial Park. New members are welcome. Equipment not included.

50+ Softball

Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon (Seasonal)
Enjoy the sun and bring a friend to play or watch 50+ Softball. Memorial Park is the home of the Cupertino Sandlot softball group, which warms-up and takes batting practice beginning at 9 a.m. A pick-up game starts promptly at 10 a.m. each week. Participants must bring their own gloves and bats. Pre-registration for 50+ Softball Required.

Ping Pong

Tuesday, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Friday, 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Two ping pong tables are available in a non-competitive environment. Drop-in to play ping pong with friends. Participants must bring their own ping pong paddle. Room capacity is limited to 25 players.

Karaoke

Thursday, 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Join this lively group for singing and dancing every week. Singers and music lovers of all levels are welcome.

Ballroom Dance

Monday, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Do you love to dance? Strap on your dancing shoes and stop by for an afternoon of music and fun. Room capacity limited to 30 persons.

Rhythmaires

Friday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Enjoy upbeat Americana music? Come sit and enjoy listening to our Rhythamires Band practice on Friday mornings.
